R32 (chemical name difluoromethane) is the most widespread refrigerant gas in new-generation home air conditioners today, and has largely replaced the previous R410A.

What a refrigerant gas does

In an air conditioner, the refrigerant is the substance that circulates between the indoor and outdoor units, absorbing heat at one point in the circuit and releasing it at another, thanks to state changes (from liquid to gas and back) that occur as pressure varies. It’s the core of how any air conditioner works, regardless of brand or Inverter technology.

Why R32 is considered more eco-friendly

The key figure is GWP (Global Warming Potential), which measures how much a gas contributes to the greenhouse effect compared to CO₂ over 100 years if released into the atmosphere. R32 has a GWP of about 675, versus 2,088 for R410A: an environmental impact reduced by about 68% in case of accidental leakage — the scenario European F-Gas regulations aim to progressively limit over time.

The A2L safety classification

R32 is classified A2L, meaning mildly flammable, while R410A is classified A1, non-flammable. This difference requires some additional precautions during installation and maintenance — maximum gas quantities per room, minimum distances from ignition sources — that a qualified installer applies as standard practice. For the end user, a correctly installed R32 air conditioner carries no greater practical risk than an R410A one.

What it means for buyers

In practice, the choice of refrigerant gas is almost never an active purchasing criterion: today the vast majority of new home air conditioners come with R32 by default, while R410A survives only on older models or discontinued stock.
