Single-split and dual/multi-split are the two configurations by which a fixed air conditioner connects indoor units to the outdoor one. The difference lies in the ratio between indoor and outdoor units, not in the cooling technology itself.

A single-split is the simplest and most common setup: one outdoor unit (the compressor) connected to one indoor unit, cooling a single room. It’s the standard choice for anyone needing to cool just one room, or for those who prefer separate outdoor units for each room to be cooled.
How a dual or multi-split works
A dual-split connects two indoor units to the same outdoor unit; a multi-split connects three to four (or more, on professional models). The main advantage is having a single outdoor unit instead of two, three, or four separate ones: less clutter on the balcony or facade, only one outdoor installation job, and often overall savings compared to installing the same number of separate single-splits.
The trade-off worth knowing
A dual or multi-split’s compressor is sized mainly assuming one indoor unit at a time, or several units at once but at a reduced level compared to the absolute maximum a single unit could reach. Running every connected room at full load at the same time — for example on a very hot day with the whole house occupied — slightly lowers each room’s performance compared to single use. It’s an acceptable trade-off for anyone who will mostly use one room at a time (typical in an apartment with rooms used at different times of day), less so for anyone needing maximum simultaneous cooling in multiple rooms.
When to choose one or the other
A multi-split makes sense when outdoor space for installing multiple units is limited, or when the facade’s appearance restricts the number of visible outdoor units. Separate single-splits remain the more sensible choice for anyone wanting maximum simultaneous performance in every room, with no shared-power compromise, accepting the higher installation cost.
