Inverter and on/off are the two technologies by which an air conditioner regulates its own power to reach and hold the set temperature. The difference lies in how the compressor works, not in what it does.

How an on/off unit works

An on/off air conditioner has a compressor that runs at a single fixed speed: full power or off. Once the desired temperature is reached, the compressor stops completely; when the temperature rises past a threshold, it restarts at full power. The result is a continuous cycle of switching on and off, with noticeable temperature swings in the room and energy consumption concentrated in the restart spikes — the moment an electric motor draws the most current.

How an Inverter unit works

An Inverter air conditioner instead has a variable-speed compressor, continuously and electronically regulated: as the room approaches the set temperature, the compressor slows down instead of stopping, maintaining a steady flow of cooling (or heating) proportional to the actual need at that moment. The compressor only stops if the temperature stays stable for an extended period.

The three practical differences

Consumption: by avoiding full-load restart spikes, an Inverter unit typically consumes less energy for the same output, a benefit directly reflected in SEER and SCOP figures and on the electricity bill. Noise: a compressor running at a reduced, steady speed is generally quieter than one switching on and off at full power, a difference especially noticeable at night. Temperature stability: an Inverter keeps the room continuously closer to the set value, while an on/off unit produces noticeable swings of a few degrees between cycles.

Why on/off units have nearly disappeared

European energy efficiency regulations have made it progressively harder for on/off models to reach the energy classes the market demands, and major brands have gradually phased on/off units out of the residential segment.
